2014 Make and Take

This year we have planned the 2014 make and take for the 28th of January from 4:30 to 6 in SC 404. If there is bad weather this day we will move it to the 29th. This year we will be doing several projects including:

periodic table trends

OJ clocks

and several other smaller projects.

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

2013 Make and Take

We had a great turnout for the make and take. We completed 5 projects including

1) a genecon setup for the electrolysis of water

2) designs for a genecon setup using small lamps

3) an isotope activity using different color beads

4) a factor label exercise using dominoes

5) a polarity of water demonstration using balloons and bubbles.

I hope everyone that was able to attend had a good time.

CINSAM night 2012

We had a huge turnout for cinsam night I think around 50 people. Debby Brock was nice enough not to set the building on fire. We discussed ideas for meetings this year and the topic topics was the normal share-a-thon and make -and-take as well as a POGIL workshop likely on a Saturday Morning. (http://www.pogil.org/)

If anyone has ideas or request be sure to let us know my email address is sieveb1@nku.edu

From Robert And…

From Robert Anderson –

OK…I know some of you bio teachers may not be as geeked about this as I am, but this is too good not to share.  The link below brings you to videos from Flinn’s Morning Of Chemistry from this year’s NSTA convention.  Chase and I were lucky enough to see this presentation in person.  Good stuff.

There are also links to the handouts if you want the recipes for these sweet demos.  Be warned….there are about 90 minutes worth of video demos here.

Stoichiometry report

On April 17th we had the stoichiometry workshop. With about 15 people in attendance we were able to share a ton of ideas on how to convey the topics and importance of stoichiometry. The handouts from the meeting can be found at

Thank you to everyone for a great year. We have had such a good time we are thinking about having our first summer meeting ever as far as I know. More information to come.

April 2012 Meeting

Afternoon everyone,

Our final meeting of the year will take place April 17th at 4:30 pm in SC 404 in the science center at NKU. This meeting will concentrate on tips for teaching stoichiometry to your students.  Bring your best tricks to share with the group.

Hope to see everyone there. Be sure to park in one of the garages and bring your ticket in to get it validated.

Make and Take

Last week we had the make and take for this completing 6 projects for participants to take back to their schools including:

1) electrolysis setup

2) polarity paper punches

3) Surface tension setup with mason jars

4) Dragon Breath equipment

5) CO2 candle extinguisher

6) mole sample sets

Due to an unexpected low turnout we have a limited number of some of these left over if you think you could use them and were not able to make the meeting just let me know.

Make and Take Date and other items

Morning everyone,

Over the last couple weeks several things have crossed my desk that I thought some of you may be interested in. The first couple are about the make and take.  But here there are

1)      What day works best for people?  We are looking at the last couple of Mondays and Wednesdays in January. To vote though we created a doodle poll to tabulate the results. If you want to vote click the link and make the dates that will work for you. The doodle poll can be found at:

http://doodle.com/egb6t8uueakmsxkx

2)      If you have ideas for make and take items we would love to hear about them. Drop me a line as sieveb1@nku.edu and we will do what we can get things put together.  These can be from simple things like a conductivity tester to more extravagant items such as rainbow tubes.

3)      The periodic table cards we gave away at CINSAM night I have found a cheaper source using amazon that I wanted to pass alone.  They can be found here for about 5 dollar less

4)      I found a few websites that may be of interest this last week

  1. A very nice periodic table which included in depth information about each element along with family classifications. I have switched to this one from web elements for most uses.

http://www.rsc.org/periodic-table/

  1. A nice site showing the size comparison for normal objects along with atomic sizes

http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/begin/cells/scale/

  1. Finally the Royal Society Journals has made all articles over 70 years old free in pdf form. Meaning you can find articles back to 1665 to use as you will.

5)      I have been asked to pass alone a announcement about an education course covering environmental issues in case anyone is interested. The flyer is attached to this email.

6)      After the last meeting I was speaking with someone about lab grading rubrics and syllabi. While we don’t have rubrics exactly I have gotten the syllabi from the chemistry and biology courses but of course at this point I cannot remember who I was speaking with. Whoever that was or anyone interested in seeing the syllabi could you please send me a quick email.

Sorry this email has gotten so long but as I said I had several things I thought you may find interesting.
